A Tamasha called life !

Imitiaz Ali is undoubtedly one of the finest filmmakers of our time. His stories are complex, chaotic and keeps you wondering for a long long time. We are so conditioned to happy endings that Rockstar made me all twitchy and troubled inside. Thankfully, Tamasha had a happy ending and I had a sigh of relief. Tamasha has had pretty polarized views and I understand why. There are many layers to the movies and personally, I loved the movie because I live with those concepts on a daily basis. I watched the movie recently and I am still soaking in the beauty of the movie.

Social Construct - The protagonist in an Imitiaz Ali movie is usually a rebel against the societal norms. Meet Ved Vardhan Sahni, a regular guy with the heart of a storyteller. He intends to be a rebel from the bottom of his heart, but his social conditioning doesn't allow him to deviate from the norm. Ved atleast knew what his true calling was so he could act upon it. The social construct is for people who are clueless as to what is their true calling. We can all critique the formula based life, but if there wasn't a formula to fall back on, what would so many people without a true calling do in life ? All of us cannot just sit and watch the grass grow till we finally get enlightened. In my opinion, social construct is ok for those who voluntarily choose it.

Being in love with the idea of another person - Why is it that the unfulfilled love stories are the most haunting ones ? 'What could have been' is a question that can make a permanent dent in your heart. That's probably because that love story is untouched by monotony. Enter Tara Maheshwari, who falls for the image projection of Ved. Post the Corsica trip, for four consecutive years, her thoughts revolved around him. You cannot know a person in a couple of days, it was her idea of Ved, her perception, her projection that she fell in love with. This is the case with so many of us. We fall in love with the imagery of the person that we create in our minds and suffer major disappointment when the person doesn't live up to our idea of him/her.
"I fall in and out of love everyday".
"With people ?"
"Mostly ideas of them. People only reveal themselves in pieces. Naturally, we fill in the gaps, the unknown, with what we want them to be. That's why love can be deceiving."
- Amanda Torroni

Life is a race - The monotony of Ved puts every salaried guy to shame. We see that this is actually what we do on a day to day life. It's so much of a routine that we seldom try and break the monotony of our fragile existence. Just like Ved, there have been days when I want to climb on top of the office table and break into a song and dance routine ! We have been raised to believe that life is a race. 90%, engineering, onsite, MBA, package, appraisal, spouse hunting, the list is endless. The good part is that Ved finally steps out of it and excels in his bizzare storytelling talent. It was a "taare Zameen par' moment for me !

Saccha Pyaar - Imitiaz ends up giving us our fair share of love dose with Tara and Ved in Corsica. Ved finds someone who shares his passion for weirdness and is equally mental. Back in India, Tara is hit by the monotony of Ved's life. Something that she wasn't expecting. yet she comes to terms with it and is all accepting of him. Her warmth will melt your heart and make you pine for love. The part where she hugs him and tries to hold onto him with the 'agar tum saath ho' song in the background is an epic Imitaz Ali moment. The romance in his movies is surreal. But then, saccha pyaar is an urban legend or the real deal is a different story altogether.

Maths padho, Engineering karo - This maths mayhem has a traumatizing childhood experience for zillions. And if you're ok with science and maths, it's like it's your destiny to pursue engineering. In case you aren't doing well in those subjects, you were born to pursue arts or maybe law. At the age of 18, we aren't equipped enough to make life altering decisions. A lucky few like Ved atleast have the clarity of thought but most of us aren't grown up enough to care. That's how you get a country bustling with engineers, most of which are unemployable.

Role Playing - I have got life lessons from close quarters which revolved around role playing. I was told that in order to succeed, you have to play a character. You cannot be yourself. You fake it till you make it. But you are not the role you're playing. With Ved, the role he's playing in his daily life becomes all consuming and he becomes the role he plays. In our lives, the role of a dutiful child, diligent employee, loving spouse, doting parent, kandha for friends etc. surpasses our individual self whereas the real deal is to discover ourselves in the chaos of role playing and shine on like Ved did in Corsica.

I am lucky to have witnessed a live interview of Imitiaz Ali. He came to Bombay to become a writer. Someone from the audience asked him why he doesn't write books instead. He replied that books are very literal. Movies give him a landscape where things can be left for interpretation. I am glad he does that in all his movies : leaves room for imagination.

Mere Ramblings, No Apologies.

The cost price of success

Success is something you think you should have so that the world approves of you. In today’s world, the route to success is divided into three parts:
1.       You work your way to success
2.       You lick your way to success
3.       You sleep your way to success

I had the notion that MBA would propel my career to greater heights. It’d definitely do that but the trade off in return is something huge. And it’s not the regular you don’t get to sleep, you have nine subjects per semester, you have assignments kind of banter. It is way beyond all that. You suddenly find yourself in a bevy of strange, unknown people you know nothing about. The first few months would be all about adaptability and fitting in. If you’re lucky, you find a group to eat, hangout and watch movies with. If you’re luckier, you make your own group and induct people into it. Else, you’re just a minority, someone who doesn’t fit in or doesn’t want to fit in.
The next few months would be all about getting to know each other. ‘Networking’ as per the B school norm.  You network because you never know who might come in handy in near future. You form opinions, make friends, have conflicts, appear for exams and get the hang of a B school. Once the storm sets in, you figure out who your real friends, who your fake friends are, who is out and out plastic and who is truly genuine.

Personally, my journey has been a learning experience like no other. I had to leave my comfort zone, my people  and Hyderabadi biryani all in the name of success. If I wouldn't have been here, I wouldn't have known how it feels to be let down by an alleged friend, how there’s always more than what meets the eye, how it feels to be under constant scrutiny, how first impressions are lasting impressions, how people behave under tremendous pressure, what it feels to be in the middle of a rat race and how a dog eats a dog.
MBA is not only a shortcut to success, it is also a transformative journey of personal growth. A journey that helps you rediscover your own self. But the real question is, is it really worth the trade off?

Illusion

"People don’t like love, they like that flittery flirty feeling. They don’t love love - love is sacrificial, love is ferocious, it’s not emotive. Our culture doesn’t love love, it loves the idea of love. It wants the emotion without paying anything for it. It’s ridiculous." —Matt Chandler

Shah Rukh Khan made all the 90s kids believe in the magic of love and damaged their brains for eternity. But now, as an adult, I know better. I know that Raj was an optical illusion. I know that love is this undefined, bizarre, complex emotion that no one can put into words.

We have all been conditioned to believe in the comfortable concept of love. But with each passing day, I see its significance fade away piece by piece. I used to be a firm believer of love and other drugs. This very belief of mine is now just a fictional entity.
Hoping for a soulmate in our world is like a mirage of the oasis. Virtues like loyalty, integrity, honesty have lost its meaning and all we are left with is treachery, dishonesty and greed.
With more options comes more difficulties. Everyone around is viable and available, so why would anyone go and do the right thing.

In the past, things were simpler. Get a twig and brush your teeth. Now, there’s a host of complexities involved. Go to a supermarket. Choose between a colgate, a pepsodent, a sensodyne, a close up or a cibaca. Each, a viable option. Each would solve your purpose. So, would you ever stick to a particular brand for years at a stretch ?
We don’t. We yearn for a change. We need variety. We desire more options. We feel inquisitive. We want to ‘explore’.

When we cannot stick to a particular toothpaste for the rest of our lives, is it even possible to pin down a soulmate and stick to them for eternity inspite of the viable options out there ? Is it possible for a person to be content with a single person for the rest of their lives ?

Human needs are satiable but human greed is insatiable. I always thought that every person deep down yearns for stability and when you have that one person, it’s good enough. But the stories I witness, the people I meet have different tales to tell. Everyone’s interested in having their share of ‘fun’ while they are at it and get back to their routine lives. Human wants vary. You want someone for companionship. You want someone as a friend. You want someone to be intimate with. You want someone to be a shoulder to cry on. You want someone for the conversations. And all these someones might be different people altogether.

True love happens only in the Nicholas Sparks novels while we mortals need to deal with the real thing. Love, even as a concept, has lost its meaning. And in these dark times, if you do find someone to love and be loved back, preserve them. It’s not the happy ending that counts, what happens after that is the more pertinent question.

Mere ramblings. No apologies :)

And we're back !!

Every nauseating Valentine season, I am forced to retrospect the very concept of love and the authenticity of it.
Whatever 'love' I have experienced has always ended up in practically nothing. Even the journey was not worthwhile to say the least. I emotionally invest a lot and in the end all I feel is 'emotionally wasted'. It just enlightens me and makes me believe that men are that species of dogs that can never be trained :P
For example, when I say 'Don't call me', it implies that 'Call me till your fingers bleed', but the guy never gets it. Not every person can be pleased with roses, chocolates and money. Value addition is also a pre requisite. But a very few guys get it.
We know how expectation can be a bitch. What we don’t know is that expectation is not always a result of our own vivid imagination. Sometimes people create room for expectation in your life by overdoing things. Initially it is always a fairy-tale simply because you are delusional, blinded by this phenomenon called love. Eventually the expectation feeds on you and becomes a monstrous entity that gets the better of you. All you can think of is how things are not the way they are supposed to be. Heartache, misery, frustration and the whole fraternity befriend you.
Maybe good people make bad romances. Maybe fairy-tales don’t exist. Maybe ‘happily ever after’ is an illusion after all. At this point, it dawns on you that the minute you create dependency on a person, everything else goes for a toss.
Guys show you gestures only when you’re a conquest they are pursuing. Once the purpose is solved, it’s just a static pond of nothingness that you deal with on a daily basis. Sometimes, you don’t even deserve a phone call in the whole day. Such callousness is combated by self doubt and self pity and self loathing and you still know that you love your ‘Bloody Valentine’.
Nothing lasts forever and love is no exception to that. Two people meet and like each other. Sometimes priorities change, sometimes people. The key lies in moving beyond all of this and finding happiness with yourself and within yourself. Lingering in the past just adds more crap to your plate. Maybe in the past you were happy but now you’re not and there’s a very good reason for that which you fail to see. It is important to get out of things that pull you down and do not add value to your way of living.
That is what I take back from my experiences with the hope of finding a better tomorrow. As they say, if it's not good, it's not the end.
And for what it's worth, Happy Valentine's Day :)

Mere ramblings, no apologies.

Pre-mid life crisis

“A Twin Flame (also Twin Soul) is a spiritual (New Age) concept describing a special soul connection between two halves of the same soul. According to the mythology of Twin Flames, in the beginning of time we were created as a perfect soul, that was split into two soul halves, one male, one female, that would then be cast upon Earth to be forever looking for one-another. They would reincarnate over lifetimes with this longing for each other, and once they finally meet, they would reunite and be blissfully in love and then leave this physical plane as one whole individual.” - Wikipedia

I believe in the concept of twin soul and for me marriage would mean marrying that one person who gets me, gets my jokes, gets my cynicism, intimidates me, completes my sentences and most importantly accepts my flab !!
So when the aunties and uncles search for a candidate within the same community and caste, the concept of twin soul goes for a toss and the end result is a business arrangement with maximum risk mitigation benefiting both the parties involved .  A typical girl family perspective would be :
1. NRI is a delectable entity but Indians with a 6 figure salary would also suffice.
2. The guy should have a house in a gated community and a sedan.
3. Good family. (The ‘good’ here is subject to discretion)

A typical guy family perspective would be :
1. Fair-skinned beauty, the skinnier the better. (But we Odias prefer the non skinny versions)
2. Should have a job to share the guy’s expenses. But in some cases, females are required to quit.
3. Good character.  No alcohol. No weed. (If your profile is in any matrimonial site, please remove your pub pictures ASAP, this is India, you cannot be the pub going loose woman !!)

So what we do is narrow down our options to a limited strata of the society when actually the world should be our oyster.
When you are in that tricky age of 24-25 and you are a female, marriage suddenly becomes more of a compliance than a choice. You should ideally have a candidate to get married to for your sake or else the family intervention will hit you just below the belt :P  If for some reason or the other, you fail to find your ‘soulmate’, people around you will think it’s their moral duty to hunt down that special someone for you. Nobody’s interested to know if you’re interested for such a commitment or not. People around you start getting married and having kids, so even you should bite the bait. And so, owing to the circumstances around us, one fine day, we all settle. And most of us settle with any feasible option that comes our way. We settle because we’re scared. Scared of being alone, which is why that quest for mad, passionate, extraordinary love dies a martyr’s death.

The very sound of arranged marriage is thus creepy. Unless your arranged marriage guy gifts you a destination wedding with a Sabyasachi outfit and The Wedding Planners and Tarun Chawla,  I am going to keep thinking it’s weird and illogical. Arranging a marriage typically means seeing what you get, interacting with a few hand picked and maybe hen pecked candidates, narrowing down to a lucky few, talking for a few months or worse days and finally giving in with prospects of hope, excitement and expectations.

Nobody will ever divulge what happens after the happily married part cuz in the Facebook era, we all feel obligated to act happy in our profiles (‘Best day ever’, ‘Best husband ever’ etc. )  and market ourselves in a certain way. What actually happens to you is your destiny. Thou shalt get screwed if that is your destiny.

I don’t have the statistics to claim what is better, love marriage or arranged marriage but all the candyfloss movies that I have seen makes me believe that liking > dating > loving > marrying sounds more natural to me.

But then sometimes we have to bend backwards for the greater good.

Mere Ramblings, No Apologies :)

Team Ranbir

Before watching, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, thanks to the spoiler alerts on FB, I concluded the movie is another Student Of The Year kinda crap. But when I actually saw the movie, I completely loved it. Ranbir Kapoor can be partly blamed for it though.
People who were expecting an Iron Man experience from a Dharma production will obviously be disappointed. But the fact is there cannot be much substance in a Rom Com. It's supposed to be all dreamy and unrealistic. That's the beauty of fiction.
'If only I could date Bunny'
'If only I could have an exotic destination wedding'
'If only I could have the yellow fuchsia coral wardrobe'
'If only my husband could drive a BMW'
'If only all my travel bags were LV'
'If only I could quit my job and become a Fox traveller tv person instead'
'If only I could take random trekking trips and meet a Ranbir doppelganger'
The list is endless. Isn't it ?
The only drawback with the movie was the length. Hindi movies have a bad reputation of loose scripts anyway.
What I loved about the movie was the many moments that the director created throughout the movie which made the experience beautiful.
The part where the father asks him to follow his dreams inspite of being sad about it shows the selfless love our folks have for us.
The part where Aditya is let down by his friend cuz he never calls. It explores how friends drift and how priorities change with time and all you are left with are the insatiable expectations.
The part where Deepika tells him 'we can't have it all. Something will miss out. Instead we should enjoy what we have right now'
The way he suddenly blurts out 'I love you'
When she asks why he wants to marry her, he says cuz there's a right time for everything in life.  He makes her a part of his dreams and wants to see the world with her.
The proposal happens only with 2 balloons and a cake. Minimal, simple and sugary sweet.

It's not about being pompous when the best things in life are supposed to be simple.

The movie experience for an IT person with crazy work was epic. I got involved in a story and got my share of happiness from it. Ranbir just eats all the screen space and even manages to overshadow Madam Madhuri !! He takes Badtameez Dil to a whole different level with his quirky expressions. He is the best visual treat in B-Town and I am completely charmed.

The tall tale of our beloved men

“The tragedy of machismo is that a man is never quite man enough"
 ~Germaine Geer

We have heard and seen enough cases of the oppressive man in the progressive society. The latest story  The Guwahati incident. Enough has been said and shown about it already. The videos are viral. So whatever opinion I would state won't be anything new. Whenever there's an issue, there'll be a heated discussion about it and a lot of people will have a lot to say and your Facebook newsfeed would be flooded.
Educate men. Respect women. Women's rights. Stringent laws. And more blah.

Oddly enough those ideas can never be incorporated. Ever heard of anti-rape each one teach one ?
Enumerating some pretty basic facts ::
1. As long as there's white and black, yin and yang, men will objectify women and there's absolutely nothing one can do about it.
2. People package and brand this very concept and sell it in the movies. So people emulate it all the more. Changing the word 'rape' to 'sexual assault' won't change a thing.
News channels are the only entities that get benefitted in the form of ‘breaking news’.
All of the women have been subjected to a certain degree of harassment at some or the other point of their lives be it in a bus, a train, on the road or even in a temple !!  You always have to be alert and suspicious at all times, you have to avoid deserted roads, you have to dress according to a certain sensibility unless you want the Rowdy Rapists to pounce on you, you need to do a double check at every step to check if someone’s following you, every car that slows down beside you, you need to be careful to retract.
In spite of being super careful, things will happen. A man will scan you from  the tip of your head to the tip of your toe, a man will give you his set of lewd looks, a man will come up to you and ask you what's a dildo, a man will turn into Pee Wee Herman if there’s an opportunity on a lonely road, a man will grope you in the darkness of the bus, a man will grope you in the brightness of a crowded temple for that matter, a man will pass obscene comments, a man will corner you and go around you with his motorcycle and I can go on and on.
A friend suggests pepper spray. Trust me friend, there’s never the time to rummage through your big bag, find that bottle and spray, spray, spray. All you can possibly think of at the time is to run, run, run and never look back.
Depending on your degree of luck, you either come out of the situation physically unscathed or you don’t. Either ways the damage is more on the psychological front.  Every time a certain incident happens you start questioning the integrity of your creation. Gradually you become this epitome of stoicism and learn to be comfortably numb with these encounters accepting it as a way of life. You cannot fight the thought process, you cannot fight the man with all his physical strength, you can only succumb. Such is the sorry state of females. There's no such thing as equality of men and women and can never be. The male species have their vested interests in every aspect of the equality banter so please don't take it seriously. Workplace diversity is a farce to keep the men engaged. Office would be such a bummer with no femme fatales in it !!
At the end of the day, women are physically weak, emotionally creeper-like and subject to objectification.
Now the feminists might think I am crazy but I am in fact a hardcore feminist myself. It’s just that I am not delusional. I am just being practical here. Rape or sexual assault or anything in between will keep happening. All that the fairer sex can possibly do is stay vigilant and careful at all times.
As they say, truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

A cynic’s take on all things fun

As a kid, life is all about unconditional happiness, school, bicycle, fighting with friends over an eraser, homework, birthday parties, naivety, chocolates, sunshine and butterflies.  There’s no self realization, there's no self pity, there's no self loathing, there's no cynicism, there's no arrogance, there's no heartbreak, there's no resentment, there's no remorse, there's no regret. Life’s one big party and it’s all about spontaneity.
Watching a kid hold her dad’s hand and walking happily down the road, unaware of the vagaries of life that lies ahead of her made me realize how amazing it was to be a kid. As we grow up, all that tends to change and life is all about the ‘pay package’, the ‘branded car’, the ‘luxury apartment’, the ‘trophy husband’ and so on.
The basic question is: Did we all readily sign up for it or is it a forced entity ?
Some like predictable monotonous way of living.
Some seek thrills every single day. Be it cheap or otherwise :P
To each his own.
Life as a whole is a pretty overrated concept if you come to think of it. We never asked for it. But we still have to live, survive and move ahead.  So why not soak in the sun, lie like a log, eat like a pig, watch the grass grow, admire the sea with its set of unending possibilities, jump around, love someone whole heartedly, sing our guts out and dance  like no one’s watching J
Coming back.
This post is about all things overrated in and around us. A few observations basically.
1.       Happy Birthdays:
We were born on a particular day. What is the big deal about it? If by being alive we are contributing anything for the benefit of others, it’s something worth celebrating. Otherwise it’s not. One fine day, out of the blue, you are obliged to have ‘fun’, smile all day, receive calls from long lost people whom u talk to only on your birthday or their birthday :\ , fake laughs and waste shit loads of cash treating different set of friends (in expectation of a proper gift obviously..barter system you see :D) all because of your birthday..!!
(Mine is on 17th of April btw, in case u want me to have ‘fun’, send me gifts….I love anything for free :P)

2.       Weekends:
Following the league of having ‘fun’ comes yet another hit phenomenon of the contemporary world…Weekends. When you slog the whole week, logically you would want to just sleep and while your time away. But the element of ‘fun’ will haunt you even then because ideally ‘having fun’ is what you are supposed to do on a weekend..!! I wish someone could define ‘fun’ for me. Standing in long queues waiting for food cuz all the good places are crowded is not fun. Drooling over a doughnut all week to find it all sold out by the time you reach the counter is again no fun. Neither is the unavailability of  tickets cuz everyone wants to watch an anticipated movie in its first week of release any fun.
Most people I know booze their weekends out or do some similar random shit. (Cobra venom is the new ecstasy for those who didn’t know..!!)
So I’ll never understand the hype about weekends.

3.       The Oscars :
Recent event.
Too much hoopla.
Who wore what, who exposed what body part etc. etc. I have seen The Descendents and The Artist. None of which is as big a deal as they claim it to be. The interesting thing about Hollywood is that a lot of interpretation is left for the audience to ponder over, be it the metaphorical representations, the reading between the lines, the storyline or the intricate thought process of the writer. But I still feel it gets an undue share of limelight year after year since Americans are such experts at marketing and branding.

4.       Facebook :
America’s gift to the world, revenue for its own coffers and the power of information at their mercy has been blown out of proportion in such a way that it has become an integral part of almost everyone’s lives except the Chinese. A basic look at a person’s FB profile gives an approximate idea about the person in general, the likes, the dislikes, command over the English language, their party circuit, the clothes in their closet, their friends, their GPS co-ordinates everything..!! A stalker’s delight, Facebook is creepily getting more popular with each passing day. I don’t know whether it’s good, bad, ugly or evil but it’s quite an overrated way of the social and the anti-social mingling on a common platform.

5.       Kolaveri Di :
Mere mention of the song and my ears start bleeding. It’s just a gimmicky song. Why the fuss ? I was in Kerala when the song started creating ripples first and then waves..!! I was having a mini sabbatical from FB-land but when I returned, all I could see is Kolaveri, Kolaveri and more Kolaveri which left me wondering…Why this why this Kolaveri Di…???!!
I sit in an auto, the auto guy is suddenly singing it out loud, kids when asked to sing a song starting singing Kolaveri when it is not even a song..!! It’s more like a nursery rhyme. Maybe the closet-bathroom-singers finally felt emancipated and the soup song became such a rage.

Anyhoo my cynical eyes will be scanning for more such worldwide spread entities that are overrated, over-hyped and over-the-top. I love Vidya Balan for being crass with such elan. Obscenity was never this hot. But her overdose on tv these days is getting my goat and one fine day she might end up featuring in my overrated list..!!
Or I am just being air-headed :P

Either ways, mere ramblings…no apologies :D

The Kerala Chronicles

Thank you Abhishek Das for reminding me how lazy I have become that I stopped doing the one thing I love the most : Rambling. So this post is the result of your phone call. And always remember, I hate you like I love you and vice versa :P
So yeah let's say I am back with da-Bang and bucket loads of coconut oil :P
Confused about the coconut oil ? Don't be. My GPS co-ordinates say I have been living in Trivandrum for almost 2 months now and it's been a super crazy experience.
It all began with my quest for money just like everyone else so I sought shelter in the coconut tree dotted landscape of God's own country cuz that's where work was. All you can see here is green. And more green. And more green. So green. Finally your eyes get accustomed to everything green cuz it's humane to adapt afterall. Moreover according to me 'God's own country' is more of an hyperbolic expression. Just plain marketing strategies to boost income via tourism. But then I am more of a building person so I might be biased.

First Impressions. Lasting Impressions. But not in my case.
I hated this place initially cuz it was more of a parallel universe. No connection with the main land whatsoever.  No familiar faces, no familiar language, no familiar hoarding, no familiar music and the list goes on and on. So even the mere sound of Telegu songs suddenly became an exciting prospect.  Food is another tale in itself. The top 2 ingredients for any recipe here are coconut oil and beef.
End Result: I was an annoying whiner. Drenched in self pity. Lonely. Love sick. (The weather here does that to you. Don't blame me :\)
But PRATIK, Calvin and Hobbes, The Secret and shit loads of self evaluation made me realize how important it is to find happiness in the happy moments life presents in front of you. Resisting change is a  person's biggest mistake whereas being able to go with the flow of life is a person's biggest strength.

Current Sentiments :
Regular hamburgers, sausages, butter chicken, gobi parathas and lassi help my cause big time :P Weekends with amazing people just adds onto the euphoria. Work is fun. And now somehow living it up, creating and storing memories made me realize one thing :: Kerala somehow grows onto you and I might have fallen for this place already. Especially when it rains :)

Truly.Madly.Deeply

The post has nothing to do with the song or Savage Garden. Rather the post deals with the very essence of the song....the four letter word called 'Love'
Cliched topic and I know people have tried to demystify the intricate intricacies of louve in the past. But I need my fair share of ramblings too right :P
The funniest part is I enjoy a good rom-com and the mushy romantic scenes make my heart all gooey. I love supernatural fiction (my obsession with vamps, werewolves, soul catchers et al. needs some serious treatment..!!) and read the romance between the main characters first :D  But that's not the fun part. The fun part is that no matter how amusing/entertaining/heart warming/amazing I find these, I still find it odd to believe in the concept of 'Love'
I would take this opportunity to define what Love actually is :
Let's take a few deep breaths..shall we..?? Cuz my golden words might just go down in history :P

Ok.
So.
" Love is an over hyped well marketed phenomenon which only benefits the people who generate revenues from it. It is pure fiction and has no existence in the real world. Just a marketing guy playing a practical joke on  vulnerable innocent victims. "

This definition is not a result of some personal vendetta or me nursing a broken heart. It is just the practical side of me talking. If it wouldn't have been for love or the consequences of love, the movie industry or the music industry or the flower industry or the chocolate industry or the card industry or the creepy Teddy Bear industry wouldn't have flourished the way they have..!!
No love = No SRK romancing chiffon saree clad actresses, No Bruno Mars catching a grenade for someone, No Adele rolling in the deep, No Cadbury Silk ad that makes us go Awwwww and the list goes on and on and on....

The only kind of unconditional Love is the one your family gives you. They accept you with your flaws. Don't ask you to change. And don't ask for anything in exchange. That is what I would call Love.

And when it comes to romantic inclinations, I think it's all about seeking the companionship of someone you like and sticking to him/her with conviction, integrity and dedication. As my friend had rightly said, " If you are in a maize field, you don't try out all the corns in the field to find out which one is the best. If you find something good enough, you stick to it without thinking if there's a better one out there."

In the world of 'casual relationships', I am not too hopeful of finding 'Louve' but the illogical part of me still hopes to :
1) Get wooed with songs like 'Jeevan Se Bhari Teri Aankhein' OR 'Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh par' OR 'Yeh Dil Tum Bin Kahin Lagta Nahin' OR 'Humein Tumse Pyaar Kitna'....(Yes I am old school :\ )
2) Get worshipped like Bella worships Edward   ( Yes I am a narcissist..!!)
3) Get compliments at the drop of a hat (Yes I am shallow.)
So much for wishful musings..!! If only wishes were wings, pigs would fly :P

I know a lot of people would beg to differ cuz they might have experienced sleepless nights, butterflies in their  thoracic cavity, racing heart, anxiety, excitement etc. (Science says it due to the production of Dopamine and Norepinephrine in the human body and reduction of serotonin in the blood level...so let's not give undue credit to louve..shall we..?? :P)
But whatever. To each his own.
And as always. Mere ramblings....No apologies :)

The legacy of a Chammak Challo..!!

Once upon a time in Bolly-land, there lived a song called :
" Chammak challo oooohhh  Chammak challo
Zaara dheere chalo, zaara dheere chalo
  Hooo warna jayogi phisal
  lachak jayegi patli kamar "  :| :|
The song is from a movie called 'Ajay' and features Sunny 'paaji' Deol and Karishma Kapoor. ( It's only fair that Kareena is carrying the legacy forward)

There was another Chammak challo song in Bolly-land featuring the wholesome entertainer Govinda and Urmila from the movie Kunwara and was sadly sung by Sonu Nigam but let's not even talk about it. We all know how tragic Govinda dance numbers are.

Personally I hate the mere sound of the word 'Chammak challo'. It sounds very anti-feminist. So when I thought Bolly-land was 'chammak challo proof'....along came 'Wanna be my Chammak Challo'..!!

The USP of a song these days is the 'Catchphrase'. Be it Jalebi bai, DK Bose or the very latest Chammak challo. Since SRK is the king of marketing, I expected no less.
Throw in a catchphrase, a super successful R&B artist, Kareena in a hot red saree minus the aanchal and the mere presence of SRK = a recipe for success. And it was. Even before the official music release, the song was all over Facebook and YouTube and became an instant rage overnight..!!
But I still find the song annoying. I don't understand the lyrics even though it has been penned down by my favourite Vishal Dadlani. It doesn't make any sense..!! To add to my woes, the song is practically everywhere. Chammak challo is the perfect replacement for Anna Hazare it seems. When you hear a particular song 50 odd times a day, it tends to grow on you. But in my case, it is yet to sink in.

It seems the song makers were desperate to popularize the song and attempt is clearly visible. The choreography looks bizzare and I wonder why the female background dancers are scantily clad when they are supposedly doing some classical dance form..!! A special mention here of Miss Kareena Kapoor. She tends to go overboard with her expressions at times and I didn't get the deal with her saree in the song.
Anyway the only saving grace in the whole song is the man Shah Rukh Khan himself. His blue eyes are droolworthy..!!
Otherwise it is plain disappointment. Disappointed with Vishal-Shekhar whom I otherwise love, disappointed with Vishal who has penned amazing lyrics in the past, disappointed with Kareena who I think is the Goddess of Bolly-land. Not to forget rapist Akon's pathetic whiny voice. He demeans women in a way no one does and objectifies them in a way no one can..!!
If all this was not enough, Kareena claims that this isn't an item song..!! D'uh. Scantily clad women and       in- your- face decolletage  is proof enough..!!
Since I am a sucker for the music of Bolly-land, I hope the other tracks are way better and more meaningful.

Mere ramblings..no apologies :P

Weak Democracy….And Now Bad Judicial System…Signs Of A Crumbling Nation..??

“One man’s tragedy is another’s man entertainment” – Mahesh Bhatt
It was disgusting to see Ram Gopal Verma proving this point by making a movie on the Neeraj Grover murder case…!! He was also all eager to sign Maria Susairaj for a movie. Abhay Deol was equally lame when he said, “There’s room for everyone in the movie industry”!!! There were rumours afloat that Big Boss producers were after her too. It has become a desperate need to sensationalize anything and everything in today’s world.
For those who are clueless…time travel to 2008….. the crime looked exactly like a scene from Dexter only here the victim was an innocent man (Neeraj Grover) and Jerome was no Dexter either. After Maria (Jerome’s fiancée) chopped Neeraj’s dead body to 300 pieces or (4 -5 pieces as her lawyer claims), the court sets her free on 2nd July 2011 because all she did was ‘destroy evidence’ and Jerome was convicted for ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’. Since allegedly Jerome was ‘provoked’ to murder Neeraj but had no intentions to actually murder him, it was culpable homicide and not murder.  Poor Maria on the other hand only helped in chopping the body and burning it so it is ‘destruction of evidence’.
Such crazy antics of Indian Penal Code makes me think that one fine day I might get into a fight and get murdered with a kitchen knife. Then my murderer hires a smart lawyer, they prove in court that there was no motive, the murder was impromptu and my murderer walks free inspite of chopping my dead body into 300 pieces in cold blood..!!
I bet the judge must be a smart bloke but why not use the brain instead of getting into the technicalities. Even to a layman it’s evident that it was a conspiracy but the IPC has provisions to ensure that murderers roam around to commit more crimes, Hasan Ali is free to transfer more money to Swiss bank accounts etc etc.
The most heart breaking part in all of it is the state of the parents who were hoping to get a closure after 3 years of wait. But all they got was disappointment. Stories of people and their eternal struggle with the Indian judicial system are abundant and the parents might be dragged into that vicious cycle.  With their old age justice delayed is justice denied. The grief will be only theirs because eventually the people, media everyone will move on.
A  weak democracy (Yes Mr. Manmohan…you are a lame-duck PM..I wonder what made you think otherwise) and a flawed judicial system are definite signs of a crippling, crumbling nation and I don’t think any Rahul (Vinci) Gandhi can ever fix it. The problems are deep rooted and the question that arises in all of it is that are we really safe..??

LMFAO

Good old Bollywood has a song for every occasion. Whenever the hero and heroine get or don't get an opportunity, they jump into a song and dance routine..it is hilarious at times but that's the only thing thats original about hindi cinema...its 'breaking into' a song without any logical explanation :|
Personally for me, the mohd. rafi - kishore kumar phase was the best phase of hindi music...the songs were pure music..with live musicians and instruments devoid of digitalization..music is always supposed to be in analog form. Thanks to the new age technology even a dog can bark and it will sound good..!!
But we have seen some musically handicapped years when the music industry was hit by a tornado named Bappi Lahiri  and calling his songs retarded would be an understatement ..!!  It was in 1994 that Aashiqui was released and Nadeem-Shravan swooped into the music industry like saving graces..(btw Aashiqui is one of my favourite-est albums..)
But i am more interested in doing a psycho-analysis of the lyricist's brain....Here's a list of the songs which got my goat..

1) Ouchhhh...   Dhak Dhak karne lagaa... ho mora jiyara darne lagaa..   saiyaan baiyaan chodo na.. 'kacchi kaliyan tod na' :|  The english interpretation would ideally be >> don't pluck the unripe buds..!! lmao..!!

2) Choli ke peeche kya hai..choli ke peeche   Isn't it obvious..??!! My inference is that our lyricists were sex starved....our country being sexually oppressed and our censor board being conveniently hypocritical..we cannot have direct songs.. so i guess our lyricists decide to be all suggestive..!!
Imagine releasing a song like  'I kissed a girl' (in hindi of course) in India and the kind of uproar it will create... (i can only imagine what its hindi interpretation would be..lol..!!)
But choli ke peeche kya hai..seriously..??!! Objectification of women has been rampant and even the songs cannot escape its presence..

Moving over from explicit songs to some really inane stuff...

3) Tamma tamma logey  (it's encrypted code..i bet noone can decode it)   tamma tamma logey tamma   tu premi..AHAA   main premi..AHAA..   tu raazi..AHAA   main raazi..AHAA..   phir kya daddy kya amma..ek bas tu hi pyaar ke kaabil..saara jahaan hai nikamma..

4) this one is my permanent chart buster..actually song no. 3 is copied from this song.   Jumma chumma de de (rearranged version of 'i kissed a girl'..the girl in question here    is Jumma..:P)   Jumma chumma de de chumma

5) Mera naa--aaaaa--aaam Shabnam...pyaar se log mujhe Shabo kehte hain   tumhara naam kya hai..?? Eena ya meena...anju ya manju   *laughs*   eena..meena..anju..manju..yaaaa madhu.. (no these aren't the common Indian female names)

6) question -- Ladki hai kya..??   answer -- re baa baa   question -- uski adaa..??   answer -- re baa baa   question -- uska nasha..??   answer -- re baa baa   re baabaa re baabaa re baabaa baabaa baabaa baabaa    (talk about obsession with nursery rhymes..!!)

7) an educational song was :   ek do teen char panch che saat aath nau dus gyaraah barah terah   terah karoon din gin gin ke intezaar..aaja piya aayi bahar..   learning counting was never as easy..

8) chamakchalo chamakchalo  zara dheere chalo..zara dheere chalo..!!   Innovative ways of addressing a female..a feminist's outcry..

9) lyricists have even found a way of incorporating a scorpion's bite into a song..   i think it should have been the ost of 'the scorpion king' :|   bichua..bichua..bichua..bichua..bichua..bichua..bichua..   ho bedarda aadhi raat ko meri chaat pe chadh gayaa..   chori se haaye ungli mein challa de gaya..    bichua..bichua..bichua..bichua..bichua..bichua..bichua..

10) The choreography of this song can put the top choreographers to shame..this genre of   gyrating vibrating hyper voluptuous hip of Shilpa Shirodkar and the extra dancers is   unrecognised to the world..youtube it to know what m talking about ;)    Angna mein baba..duare pe maa..kaise aayein gori hum tohre ghar ma..    Khet gaye baba..bazaar gayi maa...akeli hoon ghar ma tu aaja balma..:|

11) If you think "22222" is Docomo's sound..think again..     the song is:     222222             2222222      athra baras ki kuwari kali thi...:P   now the lyricist wants to address the heroine as "unmarried bud"..i clearly don't  understand the obsession with a mere 'bud'..   on one occasion..heroine says dont pluck unripe buds..on another occasion she says  she's a bud...the heroine in question here is madhuri dixit..   clearly the context in which the word 'kali' is used is still undetermined..

12) Ek aankh maaron toh parda hat jaaye     duji aankh maaron kaleja kat jaaye (if i wink, my liver gets cut)    dono aankhein maaron toh chori pat jaaye chori pat jaaye       ---- A Bappi Da creation which speaks for itself :)

13) tofa tofa tofa tofa     laaya laaya laaya laaya    tere tere tere tere    liye liye liye liye        ---- A Bappi Da creation yet again :P

Watch out this space for more spiritual insights like these ;)

Service to mankind is service to God

Most of us have been living formula-based lives maybe due to sheer ignorance, due to the the predictability of the formula or maybe it's the easy way out. By formula-based life I mean....go to school..get good marks to get into college...study hard to crack some entrance to get into some proper grad school....excel in grad school to get a well paying job. So in the end it's all about the money. We get educated to get a degree that gets us a dishy job. Commercialization of education is at the top of its game. The schools are more about having multi cuisine food courts, horse riding instead of the quality of learning. We should study to learn new things, new concepts, new theories which helps us understand the world around us. But instead it's rote learning that everyone of us focuses on.
So coming back to the formula based life (yes I have a bad habit of getting carried away..my bad), i wish the formula just ended with grad school but sadly it doesn't. After grad school, it's post graduation to double that pay package, then the inevitable M word (read marriage), then the intolerable K word (read kids..and boy they talk or what...the new generation is getting more wild, more ungrateful and more indisciplined...yes i hate them all..but that's another blog altogether :P ), putting them through the same formula by which we have led our lives thereby making it a vicious cycle altogether..!! So all our life ends up getting caught up in the social obligations and responsibilities. There's no time left to think out of the box and make something useful of the lives God has given us. I mean we are all here for a purpose right. If we are so caught up in our own lives, when do we get the time to do something substantial with our lives..??
I am no different. I am also leading a cliched life. School > College > Engineering > TCS. I had thought that the shortest way to 20k is engineering and that is the sole reason why I opted for it. But this is not what makes me happy or I want to do. I want to see the world (like a zillion others), I want to making singing my profession, I don't like the idea of dog eat dog world...the world was never supposed to function that way so there's no way I can survive in that kind of a world, i want to learn how to play the drums, I want to get into a proper music school and study music etc etc.  By saying all this I am being very vain and making myself the epicenter of my whims and fancies cuz up until today this was the idea of a non cliched life I had in my mind.

But today I saw two things on TV. Amazing Indians on Times Now and Real Heroes on CNN IBN. I was always keen on giving back to the society and I have ideas but I wasn't quite sure how I'll execute them. Moreover I was so delusional about my to-do list that I conveniently had forgotten all about the 'giving back to the society' part. The people that featured on TV have given up their own selfish motives to help so many around them. It was awe inspiring to say the least. Be it Binalaxmi Nepram and her interest free loans to the women of Manipur or Ajeet Singh rescuing minor girls who were being trafficked in the holy city of Varanasi or Faith Gonsalves and her music basti or Rajesh Bhat Subraya training villagers to become BPO executives..the list goes on and on. Every story is an inspiration. Every story shows that the ratio of the needy people to the helping hands in India is still huge and helping bridge that gap should feature on everyones to-do list.

We are born privileged to help the under privileged. India is truly a diverse country where the a Cabinet minister has assets worth 263 crores yet 55% of India's population is still poor..!! If the money gets accumulated in secret Swiss accounts, how will the economy boost ever happen..??!!
Corruption is rampant...corruption has been over hyped so I won't even get into that territory.

We all will be dealing with our own set of pre mid-life, mid-life, post mid-life crisis etc but that should not daunt us from doing a selfless deed once a while. But again to each his/her own.

Mere ramblings...no apologies :P

Happy Birthday, Happy Head, Happy thoughts

Vakratunda Mahakaya
Suryakoti Samaprabha
Nirvighnam Kuru Mey Deva
Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada

Translation: The Lord with the curved trunk and a mighty body, who has the magnificance of a Million suns, I pray to you Oh Lord, to remove the obstacles from all the actions I intend to perform.

Today was Lord Ganesha's birthday so here's wishing him a very happy birthday :)
Birthdays of Hindu deities are considered to be auspicious days so I managed to wake up by  10.30 am ( I usually wake up at 2pm these days simply cuz I have no clue what to do the entire day so I wake up directly in the afternoon :P ) and was all set to offer flowers to the cutest Hindu God by 11am. Not impressive at all I know but I somehow have never believed in idol worship. I find it illogical. Actually I was somewhere close to being an atheist but I became a believer due to my friends. My friends were staunch believers, visited temples, worshipped deities etc. Things weren't going well in my life so I was looking for something to cling onto and make things better and seeing my friends made me think twice about my beliefs and ideologies.

I still don't believe in rituals and all that jazz Hinduism is over brimming with. I believe in a Supreme Power that governs us, I believe in the projection of thoughts, I believe in a four letter word called Hope, I believe in Karma and I believe that everything around us is sheer energy. So i am a believer :)

Scientists have come up with 'String Theory' in the past which states that matter consists of one dimensional oscillating lines called strings. Oscillation means it has some kinetic energy associated with it. Hence proved we are nothing but sources of energy. We are sources of energy derived from an energy at a much higher level which we address as 'GOD'. So eventually it will boil down to the 'unification of the universe' as Einstein had proposed, the common link being 'energy'.

Again this is my crazy logic. Just a fleeting thought. And this reminds me of the whole projection of thoughts subject. Call me crazy but I see Aastha channel at times to get a dose of spirituality. It's not like whatever they show there is amazing but I came across a Brahmakumari called Shivani. She has done her engineering but turned to spirituality at a very early age I guess. So in one of her interviews she talked about our projection of thoughts. She said that we human beings are like radiators. Whatever we think is projected by our aura. So basically it our 'sthiti' (state of mind) that causes our 'paristhiti' (situations). Dan Brown's book Lost Symbol mentions Noetic Science which is actually the projection of thoughts. Hindu mythology has stories of Tansen making it rain by singing the raaga associated with rains which is again talking about the power of thoughts. Such is the power of thoughts that our thoughts become who we are.

So now it boils down to a very simple thing. Positivity and negativity, black and white, yin and yang. I personally think humans are more like transceivers (a device which can both transmit and receiver). So you have positive thoughts, your aura transmits it to the world and the world is a better place. Harbour negative thoughts, your aura transmits it to the world, the world becomes darker than it already was.
Now comes the vulnerable receiver part. You are receptive to both negative energy and positive energy. So it's your responsibility to filter out the negative energy at all times.
Since we are all sources of energy, it's on us whether we want to be a source of positive energy or negative energy. Nurturing jealousy, hatred, anger etc. will only downgrade our energy level so it's totally not worth the undue attention we tend to give it.
Since as Hindus we have a variety of deities to select from, here's hoping our favourite God helps us have happy thoughts and sail smoothly through the epic journey called Life.the curved trunk and a mighty body, who has the magnificance of a Million suns, I pray to you Oh Lord, to remove the obstacles from all the actions I intend to perform.e Lord with the curved trunk and a mighty body, who has the magnificance of a Million suns, I pray to you Oh Lord, to remove the obstacles from all the actions I intend to perform.

Dear Diary...

This is the official first blog on blogspot so I should be the the focal point of the blog..!! I have used and misused Facebook and Google+ in the past to ramble about anything that irks me, elates me, annoys me etc etc  but from now on blogspot will serve as my 'Dear Diary' and the contents can be anything ranging from inane, crazy, sheer blah, absolute bleh kinda stuff  to something substantial..depending on my mood swings.
I would be shocked if someone reads this..but yeah..if someone does..I would like to say 'Welcome to my life' :)

I wanted to have my own blog since ages now but somehow I was too lazy to bring myself to type something out and by the time I decided to have this online journal of my own, writing blogs were 'in'. I don't follow trends so I procrastinated my blogspot debut further. But not anymore. (Especially after reading Shobha De's blogs..I realised if she can post crap..I can do a much better job than that..!!)
So I have arrived and how :P

Anyway
My current mood update : annoyed
And no I don't update my about my swinging mood patterns on FB cuz I realize I am not a superstar and FB is not twitter. No one is interested to know what shampoo I use, what internet connection I use or what I had for lunch today !!  But I don't hate those who confuse themselves to be local/international celebrities.....they end up providing fodder to hone my stalker skills....so I love them for that :P

I guess my introductory blog is ok enough.
Ramblings..No apologies whatsoever :P
