The legacy of a Chammak Challo..!!

Once upon a time in Bolly-land, there lived a song called :
" Chammak challo oooohhh  Chammak challo
Zaara dheere chalo, zaara dheere chalo
  Hooo warna jayogi phisal
  lachak jayegi patli kamar "  :| :|
The song is from a movie called 'Ajay' and features Sunny 'paaji' Deol and Karishma Kapoor. ( It's only fair that Kareena is carrying the legacy forward)

There was another Chammak challo song in Bolly-land featuring the wholesome entertainer Govinda and Urmila from the movie Kunwara and was sadly sung by Sonu Nigam but let's not even talk about it. We all know how tragic Govinda dance numbers are.

Personally I hate the mere sound of the word 'Chammak challo'. It sounds very anti-feminist. So when I thought Bolly-land was 'chammak challo proof'....along came 'Wanna be my Chammak Challo'..!!

The USP of a song these days is the 'Catchphrase'. Be it Jalebi bai, DK Bose or the very latest Chammak challo. Since SRK is the king of marketing, I expected no less.
Throw in a catchphrase, a super successful R&B artist, Kareena in a hot red saree minus the aanchal and the mere presence of SRK = a recipe for success. And it was. Even before the official music release, the song was all over Facebook and YouTube and became an instant rage overnight..!!
But I still find the song annoying. I don't understand the lyrics even though it has been penned down by my favourite Vishal Dadlani. It doesn't make any sense..!! To add to my woes, the song is practically everywhere. Chammak challo is the perfect replacement for Anna Hazare it seems. When you hear a particular song 50 odd times a day, it tends to grow on you. But in my case, it is yet to sink in.

It seems the song makers were desperate to popularize the song and attempt is clearly visible. The choreography looks bizzare and I wonder why the female background dancers are scantily clad when they are supposedly doing some classical dance form..!! A special mention here of Miss Kareena Kapoor. She tends to go overboard with her expressions at times and I didn't get the deal with her saree in the song.
Anyway the only saving grace in the whole song is the man Shah Rukh Khan himself. His blue eyes are droolworthy..!!
Otherwise it is plain disappointment. Disappointed with Vishal-Shekhar whom I otherwise love, disappointed with Vishal who has penned amazing lyrics in the past, disappointed with Kareena who I think is the Goddess of Bolly-land. Not to forget rapist Akon's pathetic whiny voice. He demeans women in a way no one does and objectifies them in a way no one can..!!
If all this was not enough, Kareena claims that this isn't an item song..!! D'uh. Scantily clad women and       in- your- face decolletage  is proof enough..!!
Since I am a sucker for the music of Bolly-land, I hope the other tracks are way better and more meaningful.

Mere ramblings..no apologies :P

How I don't get why people like Govinda's dance !?

Except for the blue eyes part, SRK for some reason reminds me of Dev Anand, not to mention, he looks gay. And Kareena Kapoor, with the 'Queen of Bollywood' illusion about her is awfully annoying.

  2. Hey
I heard the song fully, for the first time today in my car and i was thinkking the same time. It tries to hard to become the next munni/sheila and it shows thru it.
I am a huge devotee of SRK but i feel he`s kinda having a mid life crisis...and if this movie fails it`ll crush him! Kareena w\too is trying too hard to get it right and be pegged as this years katrina/maliaka

@Pooja A large population of India have the core of a ricksha-waala. So obviously they enjoy Govinda's dance, Golmaal trilogy, Housefull etc etc..!! There is a dearth of intellectual crowd..!! Haha Kareena has some issues I am assuming..!! And suddenly she has become really dumb. i don't know why. I loved her and it breaks my heart.

@FashionPHD hell yeah..!! Wonder what's wrong with Kareena and Shah Rukh. Kareena is desperate to be objectified it seems.

i just saw this blog from your fb profile through a mutual FB friend( if this a little creepy - sorry!)
but i am glad i did that. you have actually inspired me to write my thoughts as a blog.
As far as this article my sentiments exactly. except i don't like shahrukh khan too. even i liked Kareena kapoor. don't know what happened there.
The song is a very pathetic attempt at selling the movie plus the background dancers look like girls from a cheap indian porn movie. :(
    keep writing . :)

@Anonymous of comment 5 : I so don't dance to LP or Enrique. They don't even come close to the list of my favourite musicians. When I say 'core of ricksha-waala' I mean the majority Indian audience it not the intellectual kinds, most enjoy watching escapist crap.

@Anonymous of Comment 6: Don't apologize. I am a hardcore FB stalker myself so I don't judge :P and thank you for the kind words. Appreciate it :)

  11. Oh My.! Kareena looks real awful with that nose ring. And yeah, at a point of time.. probably sometime around 2.08, the female playback begins crooning in Tamil :|

PS- The only thing i like about the song is that Akon's Hindi seems to be better than Naveen Pattnaik's odia. :P

  12. Nishita says:

I swear..!! I don't get the deal with the Tamil lyrics..!! Moreover I think Akon is Africa's answer to Him-ass Reshamiya..!! How else do u explain the irritating nasal twang...??!! I find the hindi annoying, Mr. Naveen Patnaik I can still tolerate.
